Martin Luther King Day Celebration

January 19, 7 PM, Ashe Arts Center

The Ashe County Arts Council will sponsor a community celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King at 7 PM on Monday, January 19th at the Ashe Arts Center in West Jefferson. The celebration will highlight the message of Dr. King and his teachings of peace, unity and equality in our society. The program will include excerpts from letters and writings of Dr. King as well as keynote speaker Jaki Shelton Green, North Carolina’s ninth Poet Laureate.

This event is free and open to the public.

Through poetry and personal reflection, Green explores how Dr. King’s vision of peace, unity, and compassion continues to inspire our collective journey toward inclusion and understanding. A highly acclaimed poet and teacher, Green is the first African American and third woman to serve as North Carolina Poet Laureate. Her work has been performed, choreographed, and translated into symphonies, film, and dance, and she has received numerous honors including the North Carolina Award for Literature and induction into the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame.
