Martin Luther King Day Celebration at the Ashe Arts Center
The Ashe County Arts Council will be sponsoring a community celebration in honor of Martin Luther King Day on Monday, January 16 at 7:00 pm at the Ashe Arts Center in West Jefferson.
The celebration will feature essays, speeches and tributes highlighting the message of Dr. King and his teachings of peace, unity and equality in our society. The program will include readings that highlight achievements by African Americans in the history of civil rights in America.
The featured performer for the event is Mike Wiley. Acclaimed actor and playwright Mike Wiley has spent the last decade fulfilling his mission to bring educational theatre to young audiences and communities across the country. His focus is on key events and figures in African-American history.
Mike Wiley has a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the 2010 Lehman Brady Visiting Joint Chair Professor in Documentary Studies and American Studies at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mike has appeared on Discovery Channel, the Learning Channel and has been featured in Our State magazine and on PBS’ North Carolina Now.
